The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assess proficiency in the English language. IELTS measures English competency of individuals who want to study or work in places where English is the mode of communication.
The skilfulness in English language is determined on a nine-band scale. The scale ranges from band score 1 (nonuser) to band score 9 (expert).
IELTS tests are of two types: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training
IELTS Academic:
The IELTS Academic test is applicable for candidates who desire to apply for higher studies or professional registration in English speaking countries. Applicants are assessed for certain features of academic language to ascertain that they are ready to study. Institutes which recognise IELTS reinforce this form of testing.
IELTS General Training:
The IELTS General Training Test is for individuals, who are migrating for work experience, training programs and secondary education in English speaking environment. The test aims to assess the survival skills in working environments.
The IELTS test evaluates competency in four language skills — listening, reading, writing and speaking. The complete assessment is done in 2 hours and 45 minutes.
(Duration – 60 minutes)
IELTS Academic Test:
Applicants are asked to write on general topics. For example- an essay on a particular topic or summarising data presented in a table, graph or chart.
IELTS General Training:
Applicants are asked to write letter or essay. The style could be formal, semi-formal or personal.

The Reading module contains 40 minutes, structured to evaluate reading skills of the applicants. Browsing through the main ideas, details, and gist are assessed. The test involves checking the applicant’s ability to understand the writer’s opinion, logical argument, and purpose.
(Duration – 30 minutes)
Applicants are allowed to hear four recordings of native English orators followed with answers to a set of questions.
Recording 1:
Discussion between two people set in everyday social backdrop
Recording 2:
A monologue set in an everyday social background, e.g. a speech about current affairs
Recording 3:
Conversation between 4 people set in training or educational background, e.g. discussion between mentor and students about a project
Recording 4:
A monologue or a subject or academic topic
The ability of students to understand the main concept along with detailed information is assessed. The development of ideas, presentation and opinion are also weighed.
(Duration – 11 – 14 minutes)
The speaking module focuses on evaluating the use of spoken English.
Part 1:
General questions about you (personal, family, hobbies) are asked.
Part 2:
Discuss a particular topic
Part 3:
Additional questions about the topic given in part 2 are asked to discuss abstract ideas
Generally the validity period is set by organizations depending on their purposes. Recognized IELTS providers propose two year validity period for the IELTS test score.
